My Understanding of Prayer
« on: December 22, 2007, 04:39:18 AM »
Prayer is asking God for certain things, and those certain things can be, asking Him to guide us, teach us and provide our needs.  We can ask Him to minister to those on our prayer list and provide all their needs.

In our prayers we speak to God as our Father, and so we come as a daughter or a son.  We don't need to come as a servant to a master, afraid God may be angry with us, for Jesus said we are His body and He is our head.  Our sins are washed away, and we are made clean through Jesus blood, so we can pray with confidence, believing our Father listens to us.

I think the story of the woman in Song of Songs illustrates to me how our Father wants us to yield our hearts to Him.  He loves us with such passion, and He purchased us at a great cost.  There is nothing we can do to earn God's approval.  We have His approval because of Jesus sacrifice.

The woman in Song of Songs gave herself wholeheartedly and this is what the Lord wants us to do when we pray.  Pray as a daughter or son would speak to their mum or dad.  Speak knowing that God who is our Father longs to hear our voice, and He is a Father that delights in His sons and daughters.  God told Zephaniah He dances over us.  Imagine our Father dancing over us.  We can dance for joy knowing our Father is for us not against us.

We are to pray for God's will, and He will show us what His will is.  We ask Him to lead us, and we must be careful not to stray away from the Lord.  If we are praying each day and talking to our Father, asking Him to guide us, we won't make the mistake of straying away from Him.

We need to disipline ourselves to pray and share our hearts with our Father each day.  This is not easy because there can be so many distractions, but we must not allow anyone or anything to distract us from our time of praying and speaking to our Father.

If we do not pray and speak to our Father everyday, we will soon notice problems in our lives.  Praying is the solution to every problem that arises.  When we pray we need to be real with the Lord.  It is no use pretending.  It is best to speak to the Lord the way you would speak to someone you trust.

Pour your heart out and say it how it is.  Don't try to speak in a certain way, imagining God is like a member of the Royal family or a Government minister.  Jesus said God is our Father.  Even if you never had an earthly father in your life who loved you, don't let that distract you.  We all know what a loving father should be like.  Speak to God in a relaxed way, the way a child would speak to mum.

When we come to our Father to pray, He will not turn us away.  He is longing and  looking for us to come to Him.  So come to our Father today and be determined you are not going to neglect your daily prayer time with Him.
Trust in the Lord no matter how bad your situation seems, and don't think or worry about what's going on.  Concentrate your thoughts on the Lord and just ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and help you to pray the right prayers.  Pray earnestly, forgiving every single person that sins against you
