Prophecy Anyone?

Do we have any prophecy buffs here?

If so...let's get a thread going for prophecy.

What's your interest?

Well, according to www.dictionary.com the definition of prophecy is:

1. the foretelling or prediction of what is to come.
2. something that is declared by a prophet, esp. a divinely inspired prediction, instruction, or exhortation.
3. a divinely inspired utterance or revelation: oracular prophecies.

Since the Bible does contain prophecies, and I would think that the whole Bible should be important to us, it would be something we should be interested in reading and even studying.

Like any part of the Bible we should not argue about the Bible but there is a lot of information in there that actually can be encouraging to us.

Like when the prophets were prophecying that Israel would be a nation, and this was being written as they were beging taken captive.  It was prophecy for them to be encouraged that that time of captivity would not prevail forever.

I find prophecy quite encouraging because it shows us that God truly does have everything under control.  It is like reading the end of the book as you are experiencing the middle of the book.

If we look at prophecy with the additude that God is in control and NOTHING happens without HIS knowledge then we can rest in that knowledge.

See, I do not believe this is GOd's world, as in the best that he can do.  I believe Jesus is coming back to set up HIS government and bring LASTING peace to the earth FINALLY.  This is so encouraging to me that when I see things happen that I feel could be setting things up for future prophecies, then I get encouraged and excited that Jesus is just that much closer to returning.

That is why I want to discuss prophecy. :)

I agree that we should study God’s word to prepare ourselves for living our life.

(2 Timothy 2:15 NIV)  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, {17} so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

However, even those who studied the prophecies in the Old Testament found that they had no clue what those prophecies truly meant.  I don’t anticipate that we’ll understand the current prophecies any better.

Is there a biblical admonition to not argue about biblical interpretation?  This is bible study.  I think scripture references should be provided as supports here. :)

That’s certainly one way of looking at it.  Another would be that God was letting them know that at least an entire generation would live and die in captivity so he could clean out the idolatry from the nation that had become unfaithful to him.  Just as he waited while all the grumblers died off in the wilderness before leading them to the land of milk and honey he also waited for those who were in captivity to die off before he would establish Israel.

I think that’s kind of the problem with prophecy.  It doesn’t seem to stand on its own until it is fulfilled.  It’s so easy to project our own attitude onto it and come away with a ‘personal interpretation’ that it’s dangerous.

Yes, it shows us the end game.  That’s an encouraging thing to me as well.  It’s also a discouraging thing.  I think of all those people who will be in hell suffering.  I also don’t believe this is a true end game.  It’s only an end game to the human race’s story.  Those of us to go to heaven will, I believe, be shocked to learn that the entire existence of our universe was merely a point God was making about one aspect of his character.

I personally believe that just as the angels had a story in that Satan fell then the faithful angels became servants in God showing his love nature, we’ll also have a story and we’ll become servants in God showing some other aspect of his nature.  We’ll want to learn about that as much as the angels want to learn about the current nature of God that’s being revealed. ;)

I see.

So what is the benefit of studying prophecy for those of us who don’t hold your views?

Either that or I was in a bad mood that day.  :o

The benefit.....let's see.....increasing in knowledge....becoming educated about the prophecies that are yet to be fulfilled and perhaps understand some that have been fulfilled.  Either way increases our knowledge and our faith.

Although I do not hold the Office of a Prophet, I have been blessed with the gift of prophecy.

One day I got a call from one of my sheep as I was dealing with a tenant over a house issue and his question was about some doctrine in the book of Revelation, as he was dealing with a man who was a Revelation Book "freak". I said to him, I am not in the Spirit right now so I cannot deal with this as I have a tenant here with a problem. As soon as those words came out of my mouth the Holy Spirit spoke and said (to Spirit filled Christians, not unbelievers who do need doctrine to bring them to Christ) "We are not going to be judged according to our doctines, we are going to be judged according to our love."  I stood there in awe of the prophetic utterance as I had been a doctrine "freak" all my life!!! When I shared this experience with my son he said "All those years wasted, huh Mom?" What is comical about this is that son of mine, James Matthew, used to refer to me as "THE POPE" due to my doctrinal issues.
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy Word above all thy name.

I know that we do not have full prophecy yet, as St. John must prophesy again someday ("Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings". Rev. 10:11b)
and when he went to write down what the seven thunders spoke, he was commanded not to.
Revelation 10:4 (KJV)
"And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not."

This just proves that no one has full "knowledge" at this time, even though many think they do.
I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy Word above all thy name.

Mark 13 (NIV)
The Day and Hour Unknown

32 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy Word above all thy name.

Psalm 138:2 (KJV)
