Wish vs. Desire
« on: December 28, 2007, 09:48:04 AM »
I often hear people say that they want to be internet marketers.  They want to make money.  They want the internet lifestyle.  They want to be wealthy.  I believe each one of them is sincere.

Let's examine the word want for a second, though.  Wanting something can be many things.  Want can be broken down into two very distinct categories: Wish and Desire.

When we talk we often miscommunication our true meaning.  For instance the following three statements are very close:

1. I want to be an internet marketer.
2. I wish to be an internet marketer.
3. I desire to be an internet marketer.

Sentence number one can effectively cover sentences two and three.  Sentence two can cover sentence one.  Sentence three can cover sentence one.  However, sentence two and sentence three can't cover each other.

If I see something and I wish for it I am thinking that I would be happier if I had it.  If I see something and I desire it I have moved beyond mere wishing and have taken an action to attain that thing.

When folks tell me they want something I almost automatically ask them if they wish it or desire it.  Only wishing for something is a trap.  It provides you the feedback that will make you think you're aiming toward success while robbing you blind.

Those who desire a thing, who truly desire it, will take action to attain it.  Action is the fine line that separates those who succeed from those who fail.  If you don't see success in your ventures you might want to reevaluate whether you're wishing  or whether you're desiring and taking action.

Well said, Tim.

I read somewhere that the genius is in following instructions.

Edward,

The genius is especially in following God's instructions.

For those who are wanting to succeed but have difficulty in following directions I think the secret is to realize that it is a step by step process.  Don't look at the whole project if that seems too big.  Look at it as one small step at a time.

Developing a plan then working the plan one day or one step at the time works for me.

AMEN!  Following the plan is what we need.  What some of us have trouble doing is creating a viable plan.  Many times we do not know what to do, much less what to do first and second etc.

From the research I have been doing on self-discipline I have come to see that just beyond desire comes a PLAN.  Without the plan there is no direction.

(Ro is off to write a solid plan to stay on task for this upcoming project she is working on.)

First make a list of everything you need to do.

then divide it into three categories.
1) Things that MUST be done today
2) Things that COULD be done today
3) Things that can WAIT until tomorrow

Do the things on list number 1 today and if you still have time start working on things in list number 2.  NEVER move to list number 3 today.  Always wait until tomorrow to put them on a new set of three lists.  This will give you a sense of completion, fulfillment, and accomplishment.

That is a great plan for being organized and planning all in one.
