No Matter What
Track Record Belief
By Wendydawn Brindley
Funny thing I read the other day. You’ll get a hoot out of this one, ladies. I read a report which said a recent medical study has proven that drinking a chocolate milkshake can improve a person’s mood. The article confirmed that most forms of chocolate have a calming effect and it helps you relieve tension or stress. HELLO! They had to do a study to know that? Come on now! We girls have known that for a long time.
Think about it. You have heard that old stereotype of the housewife sitting on the couch eating chocolate bon bons haven’t you? She was merely trying to improve her mood! Unfortunately, I think a few people misinterpreted the whole eating bon bons on the couch scenario.
They made it sound like that’s all she did was sit and eat. They leave out what brought on the chocolate eating frenzy that includes: making breakfast, paying the bills, balancing the checking, answering the phone, getting the kids off to school, planning dinner, getting groceries, checking emails, making dinner . . do I really need to continue on further? Not.
There are a lot of pieces of wisdom out there floating around in ignorant land we somehow overlook until we get real analysis from some lab experiment to give assurance it is so. I am very guilty of that. I have “can’t believe it until I see a track record.” For example, if I hear at church the pastor speak on “ask and you shall receive,” then I go
through my prayer journal, think what transpired afterwards, and collect my data for my own study. That is sad. I am ashamed to admit that my faith is still conditional at times.
I am still learning that believing without having past examples of proof is the essence of Christian faith - to believe in God not in a hypothesis - to trust in Jesus and not need a “test run.” To believe in the word of God instead of believing in results shown on a chart. I think to myself, “ Okay when I did this and this did I get the results needed?” No leap of my faith there – in fact that doesn’t even qualify as a forward motion.
The whole point is just believe in God. He is the certain in the equation not the variable. He is the constant who needs no studies or evidence of success. His love and his words of truth we learn from the Bible means we don’t have to wait for test results. No matter what, he is our omnipotent source for knowing the things we need to know, places we need to go, and what actions we should take.
I think a lot of people have the “can’t believe it until I see a track record.” That could be another study. Then there could be a study to see if studies really work. Crazy. We should go back to the basics, faithfully leaping in God’s will, and enjoying the simple things in life. Now, . . . where did I put those bon bons?
