Traps
By Rolando Suffos MD

We all have some idea of what a trap is. They can be physical, intellectual or spiritual. Most of them have baits, function on similar principles, and thrive better when patience and resources are exhausted as if after a forty day fasting.

The problem is that such a situation isn’t rare. Then somebody comes, says how well he is after consulting a medium and advises to step in . That happened to one of my patients

KNOCKING THE DOOR OF THE HIDDEN WORLD

The man 55 years old, had been physically and emotionally sick for weeks, no diagnostic procedure had identified the cause, and medical opinions were diverse or even contradictory. Our case has a vague idea of God –something existing but too far and incomprehensible– therefore, has no objection in exploring a promising avenue. In his first visit my patient, gently welcomed is told about the nature of his problem. A malevolent spirit, a dead one, is disturbing him, the information comes from a dead person who communicates with the medium. Regarding charges for removing that agent my patient shouldn’t worry. That would be out of charity, unless the evil force would demand something in exchange.

Next Friday –it had to be a Friday– our man was there with a dove, and some perfume previously requested. Once inside the room where the “cleaning ceremony” is going to take place he is told to sit in front of an elaborated candle lighted altar. The perfume goes to his brow while, among chants and prayers apparently in an African dialect, the dove is rubbed on the believer’s chest, back and head. The rhythm and loudness of the chanting and the speed of the rubbing increase to reach a frenetic climax. At that very moment the dove is put between the hands of the believer who is ordered to let it fly. He does so but after flying a few yards the bird falls to the ground, agonizes and dies without any external sign of violence. That malignant spirit transferred to the dove was too strong for it to cope with. Feeling a deep relief my patient goes after his wallet and makes a generous offering to his healer.

He ignores that a his back the shaman has pressed the ribs of the dove breaking them and making the sharp bone fragments pierce the little animal lungs. When allowed to escape its wings movements make those internal wounds worse producing an internal hemorrhage which leads the dove to die of what is technically called a hemopneumothorax.

We are, of course, before a typical fraud; nevertheless, a satanic manifestation could have produced a similar phenomenon with a true spiritual cause. What really matters is that anyway, Satan, “father of lies” would be making people to believe that clear statements of the Bible like that in Ecclesiastes 9:5 “the dead know nothing” are false. Fortunately somebody helped my patient to realize what was going on and its implications. It is my hope and my prayer that he could continue growing, free and aware of traps, in God’s knowledge.
