Sharing the Love of God with Common Sense

A Word In Season

Using Words to Edify
By Ann Doupont

We all know people who are chronic complainers or are critical about everything they see and hear. We tend to want to avoid these kinds of people like the plague.

Some of us may have been like that once upon a time, and then wonder why people reject us. The good news is that we can change. The Lord will help us become all He wants us to be, if we will invite Him into our lives to be our Lord and Savior.

Our words can either be constructive or destructive. They can be either uplifting or used to put people down. When we really love people, we will want to help them rather than use degrading words in speaking to them.

As we listen to others speak or read what they write, either in person, online, on the phone, radio or television, we need to think about what we’re hearing. The Bible says to take heed what you hear. (See Mark 4:24.)

We find in Proverbs 18:21 that the power of death and life is in our tongue, and they that love it will eat its fruit. In James 3, we find that just as a ship is governed by its tiniest member, its rudder, so are our lives governed by our tongues. How important it is then to speak right words!

As we arise early in the morning, and seek the Lord for His will in our lives, we will begin to allow Him to rule in our hearts and lives, including our words. He will awaken us morning by morning, giving us the tongue of the learned so that we become able to speak a word in season to the one who is weary. (See Isaiah 50:4.)

In the book of Acts, we find that even the unlearned fishermen were given a lot of knowledge, and it was noted that they had been with Jesus (Acts 4:13.) He will do the same for all who call on His name. Jeremiah 33:3 tells us to call to Him and He will answer us, showing us great and unsearchable things we do not know.

He will give us the words we need for the thoughts we have, if we will ask Him for them. He will turn our foolishness into wisdom. People will begin to think that even a high-school drop-out was a college graduate.
