There’s power in the name of Jesus. By William Graves Let us look at the scriptures in Acts chapter 3:1-10 1 Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple; who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms. 4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, "Look at us." 5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." 7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them--walking, leaping, and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. NKJV This man was unable to take care of himself since he was a baby. Every day some relative would carry him to the temple so he could beg for money to buy his food. He figured that those people were more prone to give him what he needed to live. All of his life he was crippled asking for alms Everyday he heard people talking about world events and saw them walking and walking and walking…. Now two men said they had no money but what they do have is the authority to tell this man by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth to rise up and walk. What Peter said to him was that we are going to give you something more than money. Something that is better than sitting there in that sickness we will give you by the name of Jesus. Then they lifted him up by the right hand, and he started walking, leaping, and praising God. He was not ashamed of what God had done. What gives the power to the name of Jesus? 1. He had authority by virtue of his birth. Matt 1:19-21 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." NKJV An angel gave him a son; told him what to name him and then prophesied what he would do. 2. He had authority by virtue of his inheritance. Hebrews 1:1-4 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. NKJV I have two daughters. One by birth and one by adoption, and it would be easier to get rid of the one by birth than the one by adoption. Now I have an inheritance by adoption into the family of God which gives me the right to the throne room of God. I have authority by the name of Jesus in the family of God. Recognize who we are by our inheritance. 3. He has authority by his achievement. It is not our achievement, but it is Christ’s achievement. Phil 2:6-11 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. NKJV He achieved victory over death and exercised power to give up His life, because of that He achieved the right to have power over death and the power to have the right to give it to those he chooses to give it to. Rom 10:13 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." NKJV We have the power in the name of Jesus to get the right of inheritance by his achievement on the cross. We can do all things through Christ which are impossible by ordinary means. No matter what the problems we can have confidence that God will not give us a problem that we can not bear. Everything is possible to the good soldier of the cross. Copyright © 2006 William Graves. All rights reserved. |
