| Reaching July 2006 Freedom | ||
Freedom is valuable. In America we are very focused on our freedoms. We have "rights" that grant us freedoms. As we celebrate Independence Day, in America this month we talk about our independence and freedom. This is usually in the light of our physical rights. We focus on what price many have paid for us to have these freedoms, and many have paid with their very lives. However, let's look at freedom from the Christian perspective. God wants us to have freedom. He wants us to be free from sin. He does not want us to be governed by our carnal selfish desires and lusts. He wants us to be free from the power of sin in our lives. How do we attain this? We first must be a Christian. We must be committed to Jesus Christ. We must be surrendered to him. What does all that mean? It means that we filter everything through the Christian point of view. It means that we look at things the way Jesus would. It means that we do what Jesus would do. It means that we act like Jesus would act. How do we do that? We have to get to know him. Before and even after we begin our Christian life we must read the bible. How can we think like Jesus, talk like Jesus, and act like Jesus if we do not know Jesus. We must get into the word of God. First we should at least read it. Then later we must actually study it. We need to know what the bible says. How can we live it if we do not know it. Some people get bogged down in yearly bible reading. They start off January each year with good intentions. Then by February they are not on track. I would like to suggest that we just take one book at a time and read it. It it takes 3 months to read a certain book, then just stick with it. However, I would like to suggest that you start with the book of John in the new testament. Then I would like to suggest that the whole New Testament is read first before the Old Testament. With a good understanding of the New Testament the Old Testament will have a great deal more meaning. It will be amazing how much of Jesus you will see in the Old Testament once you know about him. So, to have true freedom we need Jesus. We need to know him and be like him. To do this we need to know the bible. Let's do it!!
