Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians

Lesson 16

Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians Chapter 6:10-17

Prayer:

Father, It is our desire to serve you with all of our heart. We realize that the battle was won at the foot of the cross of Calvary, and we simply need to act like we really believe it! Give us situations that demonstrate the need to make bright our arrows and discipline ourselves for the onslaught we face on a daily basis from those who have not been notified that the war is over, and the battle won by the Christ who died for our sins on a hill so long ago.

Key Word - "Stand"

Section Commentary

This is the warfare chapter. A war that has already been fought and won by our blessed savior Jesus Christ on the cross; our acceptance of His act of eternal Love has decided our fate. We are king’s kids and we need to act like it. When those non-believers we face have agreed with the devil against the cause of Christ and seem to have power over our lives, we need to stand upon the principles of God’s Word, and assert our beliefs into our daily lives. Nowhere in this text is there back plate armor. As Christians we need to fight the battles when we face the enemy, with our Christian brothers and sisters behind us covering our backside. Two Christians shall put ten thousand demons to flight. Make no mistake about it the enemy is not afraid of us. When we resign ourselves to do God’s will, and His will only, we are vastly superior to the devil’s meager few demons. It is not our power that the demons shake and tremble before, it is the devil’s fear of the name of Jesus…the blood of Jesus…the holy personage of the triumphant King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Oh the heavenly feeling of the glory of God, the heaviness of His presence, as we write these words!

Eph 6:10-17

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

My brethren is added to the KJV by the editors. The word strong is from the Greek word for dynamite, a dynamic strength that is able to defeat any foe no matter how strong he may look. The word for power in this verse is translated from a Greek word meaning full of vigor or a life that knows no bounds to its power…a very present kinetic life force that cannot be persuaded from its designated purpose. The third mention of a power is interpreted from the Greek word for might it is the word forcefulness. Imagine three words giving us unlimited dynamic power. We get so excited reading this chapter!

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Among the Greeks the armor or panoplia was the complete equipment used by heavily armed infantry. We need to make use of all the proper weapons for repelling the temptations and strategies of the enemy; otherwise he will use his wiles [walk all over us]. This armour is prepared for us, but we must put it on. The reason why the Christian should be completely armed is so that he may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil-that he may be able to hold out, and to overcome all the devil's assaults. The best armor is the calm, complete assurance that God stands by His word.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

For [we are] not against flesh and blood is a better translation, as wrestle is not indicated in the original. We are against evil authorities and satan who promotes sin as far as the uppermost heavens. Huperouranos is the word for high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

We need to make sure our armor is on and that we are fully equipped to oppose the evil one and after all we experience we must stand upon His principles and wait for the salvation as He is the only power that can defeat the enemy of our souls. We are NOT to wait for the devil to sneak up on us. The enemy will be destroyed as we stand like Abraham did when the Lord made a covenant with him in chapter, and walked through the split halves of the animals.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

As we prepare our hearts for each battle; truth from our lowest parts[our loins] and the righteousness across our heart [breastplate] we will be ready for the battle.

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Preparation, has the connotation of readiness, or preparation; it is found here in Eph 6:15, of having the feet shod with the "preparation" of the gospel of peace; it also has the meaning of a firm footing (foundation), as the gospel itself is to be the firm footing of the believer. Our walk must be worthy of it and therefore a testimony in regard to it.

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The large door shaped shield is our weapon used to fight satan, and quench [the fiery darts , arrows, or spears of the wicked. ). It is probable that the apostle alludes to the darts called falarica, which were headed with lead, in or about which combustible materials were placed that often burnt up the enemy's engines, ships, etc Some think that poisoned arrows may be intended, which are called fiery from the burning heat produced in the bodies of those who were wounded by them. To quench or extinguish such fiery darts the shields were ordinarily covered with metal on the outside, and thus the fire was prevented from catching hold of the shield. When they stuck on leather shields the soldier was obliged to cast it away, and thus became defenseless.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The hope of continual safety and protection, built on the promises of God, protects the mind from being darkened, and the judgment from being confused by any temptations of Satan. The Greek word Rhema is used here in this verse as an utterance (individually, collectively) indicating communication between our general and us.
