The Bright Morning Star

(2 Peter 1:19 NIV)  And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

On a clear morning just before the sun rises over the horizon you can step outside, look up at the sky and see the planet Venus shining brightly in the early morning light.  It is a beacon of beauty broadcasting that the day is about to begin.  Through the centuries it has come to be known as the morning star because of its faithful magnificence.

Humanity has lived in darkness since Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden.  Our bright spirits are darkened at birth like still born children.  Sin has invaded our race like a virus and is passed from one generation to another as if it were a genetic defect.  It is, in fact, a spiritual defect.

In his great mercy God chose to create a body for Jesus.  Jesus entered into that body and lived as one of us.  While technically he was the son of Adam because he was a human being, he was actually pure of spirit because his father was God.

This perfectly created human lived a perfect life honoring God and violating no spiritual laws.  As such he had no need to die.  Death is the result of sin.  Yet, he chose to die for those who had been born spiritually defective.  He took our place and paid the price of death for us.  This price was not for our physical life but it was for our spiritual life.  By taking our place Jesus brought the cure for spiritual sickness and death and restored humanity to its rightful place.

Just as Adam had a choice to obey God or break his commandment each of us has also been given a choice of life or death through Jesus’ actions.  I have heard some folks claim that it was unfair of God to blame the entire human race because of the sin of one man.  God provided an opportunity for each person to escape that condemnation through Jesus.

He sent Jesus into the darkness bearing a torch to light the path.  By walking in his light we can escape the darkness that has shrouded our lives.  You see, Jesus didn’t just die for our sins, he also arose to a glorified life.  We can also live a glorified life forever.  God has invited each of us to look up into that dark morning sky and see the bright Morning Star.  It signals that a beautiful day is before us if we will only bow our knees to the one who came to serve us.

(Revelation 22:16 NIV)  “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
