(John 12:36 NIV) Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
We have probably all had experiences where we had plans to do something but for some reason we got delayed. The light of the day disappeared and we had to cancel our plans due to a lack of daylight.
Jesus declared himself to be the light of God sent to a dark world. Each human is born blind to spiritual truth. In order to heal us of this spiritual illness God sent a light into the world. It remains for each of us to seek treatment and to embrace the healing process that God has provided.
Unfortunately, most people will neglect their need and not take advantage of this free spiritual medical treatment. Their concern will be for the daily cares of living and other such distractions. Yet, there are those who will reap the benefit. Those who choose to focus on their real need will reach out to embrace that healing light and will find an even greater reward.
Not only does God offer healing but he also offers adoption. God is light. There is no darkness in him. God has shared himself with us and his presence expunges darkness. As we foster the nature of God in our lives we will progress from exuding darkness to radiating light. We will, in fact, become more and more like God in our words, thoughts and deeds. We will become true children of light.
We each look at our lives and we see our sinfulness and shortcomings. The Enemy whispers true accusations to convince us that we have not truly escaped; that we are still captives of darkness. Nothing could be further from the truth. For where light shines darkness dissipates.
The odd thing about light is that a more intense light will actually cause a lesser light to look like darkness. Our sun illustrates this phenomenon. Sun spots are bright spots of light that could consume huge sections of the earth if they were within range. However, the brightness of the sun is much greater and hotter than the spots. In a picture of the sun these lesser spots actually look black even though they are brightly burning light.
Our lives will never be equal to God. He is the greatest, holiest, brightest light in the universe. Yet we should never despise the light that God has given us. Just as the spots on the sun are made of the same material that comprises the sun, so we have the Spirit of God within us, just not to the same extent. A day is coming when we will be glorified and that light will burst forth to reveal the true nature of the children of light.
(1 Thessalonians 5:5 NIV) You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
