No Other Name

(Acts 4:12 NIV)  Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

The bible is very clear that there is only one name that will allow us to achieve eternal life.  That name is Jesus.  Those who used the name of Jesus after his death and claimed that he had risen from the dead were being harassed, arrested, and put on trial.

It is amazing that a simple name can cause so much trouble.  One word.  Two syllables.  The name of a man who brought us miracles and teachings of love.  The name of a man who sought to hide his good deeds so he would not be praised, rather God would be glorified.  It was a common name at the time in one sense and yet an uncommon name in many ways.  The man who bore that name lived such a life that he forever changed the commonness of that name and made it glorious.

Joshua is the Hebrew rendering of the Greek name Jesus.  Jesus was given a Greek name, I suppose, so that he would represent being a savior (messiah) to both the Greek and the Jew.  In the time when Jesus walked the earth as a physical man all nonjews were referred to as Greeks.  It was a generic term to identify Gentiles.

(Matthew 1:23-25 NIV)  “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” –which means, “God with us.” {24} When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. {25} But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

It has never ceased to amaze me that those who claim that Jesus was just a man, if he even existed, are usually the same ones that use his name as a swear word.  I mean, really, you don’t here them walking around saying, “Oh Buhhda!” or “Oh Mohammed!” when they get angry.  They don’t call upon Confucius to damn someone to hell.

There is no question about whether or not every person will eventually recognize Jesus as Savior and God.  Eventually every one of us will stand before Jesus and kneel before Jesus!

(Philippians 2:9-11 NIV)  Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, {10} that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, {11} and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The question before each of us is what will be the result of our kneeling and confessing that Jesus is Lord?  Will we hear those blessed words ushering us into his kingdom?

(Matthew 25:21)

Or will we hear the words of rejection that will ring in our ears throughout eternity?

(Matthew 25:41

Have courage.  If you are one of those who have already acknowledged that Jesus is Lord, not only with your mouth but also through your lifestyle, you are safely in his protective arms.

Don’t worry if you haven’t yet turned your life over to Jesus.  He is always waiting and always watching.  He is there right now as you are reading this.  He has provided a way for you to also receive his loving eternal reward.

(2 Corinthians 6:2 )

You just need to ask God to forgive you.
