(Matthew 22:21 NIV) “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
Each country has a history of those people who have been instrumental in forming their government. The United States is no different. We revere those men who were instrumental in forming our country. We refer to them as the Founding Fathers. They were men of vision and faith who gave their all for a future that they could only hope against hope to achieve. They were only a collection of states that had no great standing or power when compared with the superpowers of the world. Yet they had something much greater and stronger. They had faith that God had called them to establish a new nation where all people could worship him freely.
They were normal men and women who had been denied the right to worship God as they felt the bible instructed them to worship. They were not outstanding people who had money to throw away or land to spare. They sold what they had in their former countries and embarked upon a trip that many of them would not survive.
If we were to do today what they did back then we would sell everything and leave our family, friends, community and country behind. We would also be leaving our planet behind. We would board a spaceship and travel one way for six months to the planet Mars. We would find a hostile environment that would eventually kill many of us. We would have to fight this hostile world without the modern conveniences of doctors or supermarkets.
We would have little hope of ever establishing a world of convenience in our lifetime. We would, however, be free to worship God without interference. It would be our world to do with as we pleased. We would have been given huge land grants by our government to entice us to homestead Mars. Then when the governments of Earth decided to tell us how to live and charge us taxes for the privilege without giving us any say in the matter we would have to go to war with our mother planet…something that would undoubtedly leave a nasty taste in our mouth.
Fortunately it is unlikely that this exact scenario would ever crop up. We live in a world governed by laws that would most likely prevent such horrendous acts from ever occurring. God does still call people today to step out in faith to establish his will. He may not be calling us to start a country but his will is not accomplished simply through governments. It still takes bravery. It isn’t always easy to do what God asks of us. God will always empower you to accomplish anything he has called you to do…just as he empowered the Founding Fathers.
If you have an unction (an anointing), it’s time to function.
(1 John 2:20 NIV) But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
